I'm convinced that there is some kind of Sock Fairy that is living in our washer & dryer.
This Fairy randomly choses single socks, without discriminating on age or gender, and delightfully carries them away to his hideaway. He uses them for bedding, clothing and perhaps gifts to other fairies. This explains why he never seems to take the holey socks that we would not miss.
We have a nice collection of the orphaned socks he has created. Every once in a while he does give a few of the stolen socks back, either out of guilt or he just didn't care for the content or pattern.
*sigh*
